I’ve never been asked to collaborate with another artist before so when Liz Leavitt of LLreps called to ask if I would like to collaborate with Pomme Chan I was super excited. I’ve enjoyed Pomme’s work for a couple of years now and when the Beach Boys project came along it seamed like the perfect opportunity to do something magic.

I shot this new series on location above Grindelwald, Switzerland and in Chamonix, France. It’s an idea that I came upon whilst reading ‘Mountains of my Life’ by seminal alpinist Walter Bonatti. The saying goes that black crows (choucas) are the souls of climbers lost to the mountains.

I was very excited to get a call from Florence Moll my French agent a couple of weeks ago. ” Le Monde would like you to shoot something for their Carte Blanche……”
Le Monde choose a different artist each week. The brief is to simply shoot whatever you like, the only criteria being that it’s shot within a ten day period.
I flew to Chamonix, French Alps where they are having the coldest winter for 40 years. I positioned myself high in the mountains and waited for the sun to set…. here is the result.

This is the mighty Glacier du Tour in the Mont Blanc region of the French Alps.
From the summit of the Aiguille du Chardonnet (3’824m) to the valley floor is a staggering 2’600 vertical meters and only 80 years ago this beautiful glacier stretched all the way down.
The glacier now starts a vertical kilometre higher up the mountain.

In October we spent the night on a small outcrop of rock between two glaciers.
The place is called La Junction as this is where the Taconnaz and Bossons glaciers split as they work their way slowly down the north side of Mont Blanc.
I wanted to see how the ice looked under the light of a full moon, here are the results.

Alpine Field Recording project.
My idea is to use a PCM-50 to record ambient sounds relating to my subject matter. Once the series is complete I intend to make a limited run of prints packaged with a 12″ vinyl of the recordings.
Today we were shooting around the Aiguille du Midi cable car station in Chamonix and recording birds in flight, cable car interiors and  Japanese/french tourist conversations.
