Le Monde. American Wonder.

At the end of last summer Le Magazine du Monde called us to ask if we would like to contribute to their Carte Blanche page again.

Every week Le Monde ask a different artist to contribute to Carte Blanche, the brief always being to take a picture of whatever you find stimulating at that time.

The interesting thing about their proposition was that they wanted to give me ten pages to play with, something that they have never done in the history of the magazine.

I was very complimented to be given this huge opportunity and thought it deserved a project big enough to warrant the ten pages. My idea was to cross the United States visiting as many of its iconic landscapes as possible; I wanted to show the diversity of the huge and amazing country in a very beautiful and atmospheric way.

So here is the series that emerged from our 6500 mile adventure. American Wonder.

Last week we were locked away in South Bay Studios shooting a new Ford campaign for Team Detroit. It was a great experience and we produced some stunning pictures, but I have to say… I missed the sunlight !

A Strange image from Shanghai

Shanghai1 587x440 A Strange image from Shanghai

In September we traveled to China for two weeks of shooting for DDB  Shanghai. We spent the first three days recceing various locations and  the sheer size of this city is quite astonishing. Everything is stacked so closely together. Here we see residential blocks twenty stories tall over looking a military training ground complete with sports stadium and airliner.

First Point, Malibu California. The setting for The Endless Summer and home to many a soul surfer.

This is the first in a series of work that will examine the surfers landscape as an art form as opposed to simply documenting a sport.

We were in Switzerland shooting personal work a little while ago when Publicis Zurich called. Luckily I was able to pop straight round for a chat.

The resulting campaign turned into a great adventure around the Grisons area of Switzerland and ticked off something I’ve wanted to do for quite a while.

As a keen ski mountaineer I have a real love for the mountains so when we had a chance to be heli dropped on the summit of Piz Palu (4000m)  I was super excited.

It snowed quite heavily the night before the shoot so it was impossible for anyone to climb the mountain the next day. This meant that for our shot we had the summit all to ourselves.

We jumped out of the chopper, roped up, crampons on, ice axe in hand and set out across the snowy ridge.

New EDF campaign

Olympic 48 Sheet 587x293 New EDF campaign

Tower Bridge 48 Sheet 587x293 New EDF campaign

London Eye 48 Sheet 587x293 New EDF campaign
To coincide with the start of the Olympics in London AMV BBDO asked Nick to shoot this campaign for EDF, the company that is powering the games.
At the time of shooting the stadium wasn’t finished. Nick needed to shoot for super-sites that require massively high quality images.  They created what they believe is the most detailed night time shot of the stadium ever captured.  To do this the team hired a helicopter and recorded their co-ordinates exactly using gps.  Nick then shot the stadium in daylight to capture every detail in super hi def using the new Phase one IQ180 and gyroscope to steady the camera. He then flew back to the exact co-ordinates and did the same shot at night time but using a faster more grainy capture.  Nick fused the two images together to create the highest quality image of the stadium at night in existence.  The finishing touches were created in CGI by the ever so talented folks at Solid London. The campaign was art directed by Andy Booth and Jim Seath.
